Naval War College Professor James Holmes, PhD, was the guest lecturer at the seventh Newport Lecture Series of the 2020-2021 academic year, hosted by the Naval War College Foundation. Dr. Holmes’ lecture, “What Can the U.S. Military Learn from the Great Pacific War,” explored seven lessons from the pacific theater in WWII that the U.S. military can apply today.

James Holmes holds the J. C. Wylie Chair of Maritime Strategy at the Naval War College and served on the faculty of the University of Georgia School of Public and International Affairs. A former U.S. Navy surface-warfare officer, he earned the Naval War College Foundation Award in 1994, signifying the top graduate in his USNWC class. His books include Red Star over the Pacific, an Atlantic Monthly Best Book of 2010 and he is a fixture on the CNO’s Professional Reading List.
