Daniel E. Holland III Honored for a Decade of Distinguished Leadership

Jun 13, 2025

This week marked the end of an era for the Naval War College Foundation (NWCF), as Daniel E. Holland III concluded his remarkable tenure as Chairman. During the Foundation’s annual June Board of Trustees meeting on June 11, Holland passed the gavel to friend and Vice Chairman RDML A.B. Cruz III, USN (Ret.), officially closing a decade of outstanding service and leadership.

A Transformational Leader

Over the past ten years, Dan Holland played a pivotal role in shaping the direction and growth of the Foundation. In addition to serving as Chairman, he held the positions of Vice Chairman, Treasurer, and Trustee—demonstrating steadfast commitment and strategic foresight.

Some of his most impactful achievements include:

  • Professionalizing and expanding the NWCF staff

  • Launching nationwide outreach initiatives

  • Driving progress on the Foundation’s 2022–2027 Strategic Plan

  • Establishing the Alumni Relations Committee, which saw measurable success in its inaugural year

  • Helping grow the Foundation’s investment portfolio to over $70 million

A Legacy of Public Service

Chairman Holland’s dedication extends far beyond the Foundation. A former U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer, he has spent decades giving back to causes aligned with national service and veteran support.

His civic involvement includes:

  • Serving as an Overseer of the USS CONSTITUTION Museum;

  • Supporting veterans as a Development Committee member for the New England Center and Home for Veterans; and

  • Advocating for naval education as a devoted NWCF trustee and parent of a U.S. Naval War College graduate.

Together with his wife, Deborah, he has contributed over $225,000 in support of NWCF initiatives and holds membership in both the Chairman’s Circle and Admiral William S. Sims Admirals Society.

Recognizing Excellence

In celebration of his contributions, the Board of Trustees presented Holland with the Distinguished Service Award earlier this week. The award is a reflection of the Foundation’s deep appreciation for his selfless leadership, financial stewardship, and lasting impact.

Looking Ahead

Although his term as Chairman has come to an end, we are proud to welcome him as Chairman Emeritus. In this honorary role, Dan will continue to support the NWCF’s mission of educating and preparing the future military and civilian leaders of the United States and its allies.

Dan Holland’s legacy is one of vision, dedication, and unwavering service—and the entire NWCF community is stronger because of it. The Foundation also extends its sincere appreciation to Trustees CAPT David P. Hunter, USN (Ret.), Carl C. Liebert, and Archbold D. van Beuren for their dedicated service and contributions to the Board. In recognition of their steadfast commitment and patriotism, all three were unanimously elected as Trustee Emeriti at the conclusion of the June 11 meeting.
