The Naval War College Foundation (NWCF) is pleased to announce that Sandra Smith, co-anchor of FOX News Channel’s America Reports, will moderate a fireside chat with Vice Admiral John Mustin, USN (Ret.), at the 2026 Sentinel of the Sea Award Gala on Thursday, November 5, at the New York Yacht Club in New York City.
The conversation, which will precede the presentation of the Foundation’s highest honor to VADM Mustin, will explore the intersection of defense, economics, and emerging technology, drawing on his distinguished military career and experience in the defense and technology sectors.
Smith brings extensive experience covering major national and international developments, as well as a background in financial news and economic reporting. Throughout her career, she has reported on issues shaping the global economy, national policy, and international affairs.
The fireside chat has become a signature element of the Sentinel of the Sea Award Gala, with previous conversations moderated by distinguished figures including David Rubenstein and Urban Meyer. This year’s discussion will offer attendees an opportunity to hear VADM Mustin’s perspectives on the evolving national security environment, technological innovation, and the relationship between military readiness and industry.
VADM Mustin concluded his 34-year Navy career as the 15th Chief of Navy Reserve, serving from 2020 to 2024. In that role, he commanded a force of approximately 60,000 Reserve Sailors and served as the principal adviser to the Chief of Naval Operations on Navy Reserve matters. Following his retirement from active service, he continued his leadership in the defense and technology sectors, including serving as president of Saildrone, a maritime autonomy company.
The Sentinel of the Sea Award is the Naval War College Foundation’s highest honor, recognizing distinguished American citizens whose lives and careers reflect the values and traditions of the U.S. Naval War College.
The 2026 Sentinel of the Sea Award Gala will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the program at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the event support the Foundation’s mission to provide resources that advance the priorities of the U.S. Naval War College and enhance the education of its future leaders.
